Making and IMPACT at YMLA!
We’re excited to announce a new partnership between our school and IMPACT Barber Academy in Austin! A group of students from YMLA are joining this afterschool program to learn the art of barbering — from haircutting and grooming basics to the business side of running a shop.
IMPACT Barber Academy, directed by Coach Leonard, isn’t just about cuts and fades. Their courses and training emphasizes both technical barbering skills and entrepreneurship: students learn how to manage a barbershop, build a brand, provide professional client care, and grow a sustainable business. This means more than just learning to cut hair — it’s an opportunity to gain real-world life skills: discipline, professionalism, creativity, and business know-how from experienced instructors.
As an afterschool club, this program is an introduction to an incredible new opportunity for many of our students. This initiative aligns with our commitment to preparing students for life after school — offering them pathways beyond the classroom, whether they want to pursue barbering professionally or simply learn valuable trade skills.
We are proud of the students participating in this program and excited to see the confidence, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit they develop. Stay tuned for updates — we anticipate seeing some fresh haircuts and possibly soon, professionals behind the chair!
To become a licensed barber in Texas, you must:
- You must be at least 17 years old.
- Graduate from a 1,000-hour barber school program or academy. (We strongly recommend IMPACT Barber Academy!)
- Pass both the practical and written licensing exams.
