What is CIS?
Community in Schools (CIS) is a program that supports students and families holistically by connecting them with a coordinated network of programs and resources that enhance learning and address non-academic challenges. Services may include mental and physical health support, mentorship, crisis intervention, assistance with food or housing insecurity, dropout prevention, early childhood programs, and more.
Many community schools partner with organizations like Communities In Schools, which places social workers and site coordinators on campus to help students overcome barriers to success, such as attendance, behavior, or mental health challenges, by connecting them to school and community resources.
Community schools are built on equitable practices and collaborative planning, involving families, students, staff, and community partners to support the whole child. This national and international movement—followed by over 5,000 schools—aims to keep students engaged, in school every day, and on track to graduate.
