The first PALS visit from Gus Garcia YMLA to Barbara Jordan Elementary was a remarkable success, showcasing the power of mentorship and leadership in action. Austin ISD’s PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership and Service) program has been empowering students since 1980, training young people to be role models and peer mentors. At YMLA, this tradition continues as students learn to lead, serve, and make a positive difference in their community.
Our PALS program at YMLA creates a unique cycle of mentorship. High school students from LASA guide and support our YMLA students, modeling leadership, responsibility, and positive behavior. In turn, our YMLA students pass these lessons along as they mentor younger students at Barbara Jordan Elementary. This first visit gave our students the opportunity to connect with 4th and 5th graders, sharing guidance, encouragement, and friendly support.
The day began with an early lunch at YMLA, followed by a walk to Barbara Jordan. Once there, our students spent time with fifth graders over lunch, engaging in conversation, answering questions, and offering advice. They then debriefed together, reflecting on what they had learned and how they could continue to grow as mentors. The afternoon included a visit to the library with fourth graders, where students shared reading strategies, helped with projects, and encouraged a love of learning.
The visit was more than just a scheduled activity; it was an opportunity for our YMLA students to embody the values of service, leadership, and community-mindedness that PALS promotes. Their interactions with younger students were genuine, meaningful, and full of positivity, leaving a lasting impression on both mentors and mentees.
Becoming a PALS member requires parent and teacher permission, reflecting the responsibility and commitment expected of these student leaders. PALS students must maintain strong academic performance, positive behavior, and consistent attendance. If a student begins to fall behind, they focus on their academics during visits while continuing to contribute to the program in other ways. This balance ensures that they are role models both in school and during mentorship activities.
The success of this first visit to Barbara Jordan Elementary marks an exciting beginning for YMLA’s PALS program. Our students’ leadership, dedication, and compassion were evident throughout the day, creating a ripple effect of positivity that will continue to grow. We look forward to many more visits and the ongoing opportunity to shape strong, community-minded leaders.
