PALS: Mentors Take Reading to the Next Level

Our PALS students had an inspiring and meaningful visit to Barbara Jordan Elementary, where they continued their ongoing mentoring relationship with younger students through the power of reading. Each of our YMLA PALS partnered with a mentee to select a book, read together, and discuss the story’s characters, themes, and favorite moments. This experience not only strengthened their bond but also helped build confidence and communication skills for both mentor and mentee.

What made this visit especially exciting was the new leadership step added this week. At the end of the reading period, each mentor–mentee pair presented their book to the audience, marking the next level of their growing partnership. Students introduced themselves, shared what they enjoyed most about the story, and recommended whether others should read the book. For many students, this was their first public presentation—and they rose to the challenge with confidence and pride.

This evolving mentoring connection shows how the PALS program continues to foster leadership, service, and meaningful relationships. We are incredibly proud of our PALS students for being such outstanding role models and for representing Gus Garcia YMLA with professionalism, kindness, and enthusiasm.

We look forward to seeing this partnership continue to grow and create lasting positive impacts for both campuses.
