On Monday January 14, we held a memorial service celebrating the life of our namesake, Gus Garcia, who passed away in December. 

Mayor Garcia's family joined us, and speakers included AISD Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz, AISD Board President Geronimo Rodriguez, former AISD Board Member Paul Saldaña, and Austin Mayor Steve Adler as well as Mayor Garcia's son. The Mayor and Council Member Gregorio Casar read a proclamation declaring Monday January 14, 2019 'Gus Garcia Day' in Austin, Texas.

The event was featured in the media—in the Austin American Statesman, on Spectrum News and on Univision—with our young men giving testimony as to how Mayor Garcia has influenced their lives.
