Our YMLA Boy Scouts Troop recently teamed up with Troop 413 for an exciting rifle safety merit badge event. Beyond learning important skills and safety procedures on the rifle range, our scouts took full responsibility for their outdoor experience over the entire weekend - demonstrating leadership, teamwork, and independence.
The 16 scouts who attended were divided into four patrols, each responsible for planning, budgeting, purchasing, preparing, and cooking their own meals—completely without adult assistance. Tonight’s dinner showcased their culinary creativity: one patrol made chicken alfredo, another grilled cheeseburgers, the third whipped up steak fajitas, and the fourth prepared pork chops. Afterward, each group ensured their areas were clean and cleared, keeping their campsites safe from curious raccoons and skunks.
In addition to cooking, the scouts set up their own tents, arranged their campsites, and took full ownership of their outdoor space. Tomorrow, they’ll wrap up their adventure by repacking the trailer, inventorying items that need replacement, and reflecting on lessons learned to improve future trips.
This hands-on experience is more than just camping—it’s about building independence, responsibility, and teamwork. Our scouts not only honed practical skills but also strengthened their ability to work together and take initiative.
